When I reflect on the Soil Characteristics Prezi I created, we were able to hit on multiple state standards required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The individual tasks for the Horticulture curriculum can be found here: https://www.education.pa.gov/K-12/Career%20and%20Technical%20Education/Programs%20of%20Study/Pages/Framework.aspx and the state standards crosswalk can be found here: https://www.education.pa.gov/Documents/K-12/Career%20and%20Technical%20Education/Programs%20of%20Study/Framework/Ver%20D%20Crosswalk/01.0601%20Applied%20Horticulture.pdf.
For this presentation, students are exposed to the following standards. Key Ideas/Details Standard PCS.3.5.9-10.A Standard PCS.3.5.9-10.B Standard PCS.3.5.9-10.C Integrate Knowledge/Vocabulary: Standard PCS.3.5.9-10.G, Standard PCS.3.5.9-10.H and Standard PCS.3.5.9-10.I. This is done through going over various concepts accompanied by imagery throughout the presentation. A discussion also takes place on multiple slides to ensure students are understanding the concepts. This is then capped by using a Kahoot! to ensure student understanding and retention. Students that struggled with these concepts can then be tested over and over again to ensure they are gaining the content knowledge.
Overall I think the use of Prezi presentations can be quite inventive and entertaining for the class. It keeps student attention through motion between stopping points and can zoom in on vital content as needed. I actually integrate Prezi into my class quite a lot in addition to PowerPoint, general lectures and video. It is truly vital to continually switch it up to not only keep a student’s attention but to achieve a higher level of learning.
