As an instructional designer, motivation is integrated into the theories we study. By utilizing the Universal Design for Learning Framework, learners are given a plethora of material to work with along with the designer. UDL uses three core principles: Action and Expression, Engagement and Representation. Utilizing all three of these principles allows you create learning environments that cater to the needs of a variety of learning without zoning in on one specific type of learner. When I think about integration into my class, I envision students talking about sustainability through discussions and collaborative research projects while utilizing an organizer to keep them on track. The supplemental material such as videos and other refreshers help the process, but the key here is keeping it fresh and having learners communicate, convey their ideas and gain understanding through immersive environments. I think the perfect environment in my opinion gives structure, but also the ability to creatively think and add to the conversation. There is a delicate balance here, especially as to not upset the apple cart by distracting from the cognitive objective of the lesson.
