Pivot Point - 2016 Solo Exhibition
Artist and Curator
Westmoreland County Community College. Youngwood, Pennsylvania.
“Pivot Point” is a new series of works from Dan Overdorff, inspired after looking through photos and mementos from a 1998 trip to Cancun, Mexico. The works tackle the union and blending of different styles including; Mexican Folk Art, Abstract Expressionism, Australian Papunya Painting and Pop Art. The works in this series are a departure from Dan’s earlier silkscreen works. He omitted the overlaying silkscreen print, but maintained the abstract background while further exploring the use of color theory through painting and stippling techniques. Dan was influenced by the painting styles of Kaapa Tjampitjinp and Jackson Pollock, Pollock’s use of house paint, and the mass production of similar elements as seen in artwork from Takashi Murakami and Shepard Fairey.
